Every so often in life we meet people with whom we really click such that formalities are unnecessary. Sometimes the similarities are so striking that often we figure that they will always be there almost to the point of taking them for granted. I’m not so young that I think I am immortal and nor old enough to begin to contemplate my inevitable demise, instead I exist in the purgatory of self absorption. That was until today.
Today I found out that a truly gifted friend and colleague had passed away almost a year ago from cancer. Her name is Gabrielle Bouliane. I met Gabrielle at the Mohawk in Buffalo when I was covering Terry Sullivan’s Low Light Sessions gig. Since we were both videographers and artists we bonded immediately. She became my go to person in the area and she introduced me to the beauty of bar hopping B-Lo style. As she was an amazing poet and writer we would fantasize about producing real art. When she moved to Austin, Texas and I was scheduled to go to SXSW a couple of years ago, I never thought that by canceling my trip I missed my last opportunity to be in her amazing presence. She never told me she was sick and I was reeling from economic implosion. Which in the scheme of things means absolutely fucking nothing.
Although her enormous heart has cease to beat, her art – her soul lives on. Thanks to the magic of video, she left behind for us all the strength of her essence. And in her name I swear I will live to be what it is I truly am. Thanks Gab.
